’Vagabond’
Vagabond is a Gaff Rigged Sloop, not carrying an auxilliary engine of any sort. She is carvel built and is approximately forty years old.
Length overall:
27 feet
Length on the waterline:
26 feet
Beam:
7 feet 6 inches
Draught:
2 feet 10 inches
Sleeping accommodation:
3 full length berths and room for one other sleeping on the main cabin floor (the Captain!)
Galley:
The Galley, with Calor Gas cooker is sited in the well - this is quite convenient but no cooking can be done while the ship is under way.
Sail stowage:
There is a roomy forepeak which takes all the sails, awnings, etc.
Anchor:
Vagabond carries a 50lb. mudweight which is sufficient to hold her under any conditions encountered on the Norfolk Broads.
Vagabond is typical of the traditional Broads sailing sloop of the period 1900 - 1920. The cabin roof raises while moored to provide extra headroom as, being a shallow draught yacht, there is comparatively little of the boat below the waterline.
She carries a quant pole, like an enlarged punt pole to provide motive power when there is no wind. This pole is about 20ft long and is usually long enough to reach the bottom, at least near the banks of the rivers. A fairly simple mast-lowering device enables the crew to lower the mast and negotiate bridges very quickly.
The main cabin is lit by two electric lights. A small cabin up forrard contains a pump flushing W.C., for use only by the acrobatic (or desperate).
All in all, Vagabond is an extremely comfortable and well fitted-out boat. Items like linen, blankets, cooking utensils and cutlery are provided by the hirers who kindly turn a blind eye to the inevitable breakages which must occur on the calmest of voyages.
