He married Amelia FORMOSA on 14 April 1873 in Valletta, Malta. 2,3 In 1875 he was a Sergeant 52nd Regiment. In 1876 he was a Colour Sergeant, 52nd Regiment. 3. Henry STEPHENS (known as 'Harry'), son of Henry STEPHENS and Amelia FORMOSA, was born on 17 February 1875 in Portsmouth, Hampshire. 8 He was christened on 14 March 1875 in Portsmouth. He appeared in the census on 3 April 1881 in Cowley, Oxford. He appeared in the census on 5 April 1891 in Bridewell, Farringdon. He appeared in the census on 31 March 1901 in Cowley. In 1901 he was a Kitchen Clerk. He married Fanny ROLFE Q3 1905 in Braintree, Essex. 9 They appeared in the census on 2 April 1911 in Headington, Oxford. He died Q1 1942 in Oxford. 10

On 29 December 1899 he was a Private in the Oxfordshire Light Infantry. 22 He married Elizabeth NORMAN on 22 July 1905 in Newcastle upon Tyne. On 4 February 1907 he was promoted to the Army Pay Corps. On 4 February 1910 he was a Sergeant, Army Pay Corps. 23 On 25 November 1912 he was a Medical discharge in York. He was Church of England. 22 He was described as The physical description on his enlistment papers is: heigh: 5 feet 4 3/4 inches, weight:114lbs, chest:32" complexion:sallow, eyes:hazel, hair:dark brown & with no distinctive marks. Sounds a very odd looking little chap.
